A parent's guide

CAPS · IEB · IMPAQ — what's the difference?

South Africa has three main school curricula. They all lead to a matric certificate, but they differ in structure, assessment style and flexibility. Max Claw supports all three.

CAPS

Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement

What it is

The official curriculum used in South African public schools, covering Grades R–12.

Structure

Highly structured, content-heavy and focused on consistent national standards.

Assessment

Learners write national exams resulting in a National Senior Certificate (NSC) issued by Umalusi.

Best for
  • Children in government or most private SA schools
  • Families wanting a uniform, widely accepted matric
  • Learners who thrive with clear, structured content

IEB

Independent Examinations Board

What it is

An alternative independent assessment body in South Africa.

Structure

Teaches the same subjects as CAPS but emphasises critical thinking, application of knowledge and independent learning.

Assessment

Sets its own independent papers — generally considered more skill-based and analytical, with more research and project work.

Best for
  • Learners in IEB-registered independent schools
  • Families prioritising analysis over rote learning
  • Students preparing for university-style independent study

IMPAQ

Home & Distance Education Provider

What it is

South Africa's largest provider of homeschooling and online school services — built on the CAPS curriculum.

Structure

Provides full study material, lesson plans, tasks, tests and exam marking for Grades R–12, with the flexibility to learn at home.

Assessment

Registered with SACAI to conduct examinations. Learners follow CAPS content but assessments are administered through IMPAQ / SACAI.

Best for
  • Homeschooling families needing structure
  • Children who travel, are in sport, or need flexible pacing
  • Parents who want CAPS content with full marking support
